September! Acquire health in this two tone month

Ubqari Magazine - September 2016

Sehrish Azeem

September can be considered a twin to the month of August. And this is because the precautionary measures advised within August are more or less advised to be followed in the month of September too. The earlier part of this month is considered the end of the month of the monsoon which begins from July onwards. Hence, the overall climate is not quite different from the earlier months. However, towards the end of this month, the dual nature of this month starts to become obvious when the days are hot and the nights are somewhat cooler. Some precautions that must be kept in mind are:

  1. Humidity levels in this month are still above average which is why sleeping with an open door is advised, or some way of allowing ventilation is encouraged.
  2. Sour foods should not be taken in excess since flu, cough or fever easily come up.
  3. Immediate cure for any such illness is also advised. Pomegranate is one special fruit available in this month and its speciality lies in the fact that it is one of the fruits of heaven. A tradition relating to this mentions the fact that one of the seeds found within this fruit is from the fruits of heaven and that seed often gets lost but some are destined to not lose that seed. Pomegranate comes in many different colours, like that of the colours of different jewels. Another very famous fruit are the sweeter versions of lemons known in urdu as ‘meetay’ is also quite useful in curing fevers and its seeds are used in many fever curing medicines. Socrate used to take the outer skin of this fruit along with some salt to cure fever. What’s unfortunate is that many physicians that once catered to herbal medicines have long left paying attention to this domain and are instead following western trends.  Meetha fruit also helps cure jaundice as well as stomach and pus related problems. Females pregnant over 3 months if make a habit of eating this fruit first thing in the morning as long as it available increase the chances of having a baby that has slightly blue eyes and golden hair. Another fruit ‘bahi safr jal’ or ‘bahi’ is also available during these months and it is also a cure for many diseases. It is often found in the northern areas of Pakistan: Murree, Swat, Mardan, or Azad Kashmir. The Holy Prophet mentioned that ‘eating this fruit first thing in the morning clears the mind and increases your patience. It also protects one from Satan and his accomplices.’ Eating this fruit and sharing it with one another is a good practice since this fruit helps in improving eye sight too. Hazrat Ali also mentioned that eating this fruit helps strengthen the heart and clears the stomach along with helping a person gain confidence and open his mind.

Food for the changing season:

For breakfast, use bread, eggs, cereal, chickpeas or their gravy, milk, baisan and egg halwa, yogurt and muraba amla. And tea lovers can also add tea to this morning meal plan too.

A change in season is more gradual rather than sudden because a gradual change helps the human body acclimatize itself to the differences in the surroundings. Its nature itself that allows us time so that we adapt to the newness of the climate change. Allah’s wisdom is quite evident when we notice how gradual a change occurs whenever new seasons arrive. And if take care and change our meal plans and some habits to accommodate the changes, then we would not fall ill as people sometimes do. People make the mistake of using refrigerated products along with AC’s and fans even after winters start and it is carelessness of this sort that often leads us to catching a cold and other illnesses.

Precautions:

  1. After September, using ice cubes in drinks etc. should be limited.
  2. Sleep in come covered place instead of sleeping in the open.
  3. In the latter part of the night, switch off air cooling and fans.
  4. Cooler fruits and vegetables should be avoided before going to bed.
  5. Try to shower with fresh water in the morning or afternoon instead of in the evening.
  6. Pregnant females or females with kids that are less than two years of age should not sleep with their kids in the open and instead should opt for covered areas.

Following these precautions can be quite helpful in keeping illnesses at bay.
